Dear YMCA Staff,
The International Magnet Toss World Federation is very excited about the upcoming competition scheduled for this Friday at the ARC. If you have not signed your team up for the Magnet Toss Tournament, you can do so by replying to this email. You will need a teammate in order to compete.

As many of you know the YMCA of Triangle will have a ribbon cutting ceremony at the new Kraft Family YMCA on Friday at 10:00 a.m. There are several veterans and past champions that will be attending both the ribbon cutting and the Magnet Toss Tournament. In order to accommodate all participants, we are moving the tournament back 1-hour. Lunch and practice rounds will begin at 11:30 a.m., and the tournament will start at noon. The competition will end by 1:00 p.m. as promised because we are bringing in a second file cabinet. Please let me know if you have any questions.

MAGNET TOSS WORLD CHAMPIONS CROWNED
BY MATTHEW STRICKLAND, Staff Writer

RALEIGH – Before Friday’s Magnet Toss World Federation Championships (MTWFC) at the ARC, such an unimaginable display of athletic prowess had yet to grace our fair city. Magnet Toss teams representing all parts of the triangle community converged on the hallowed field of battle for an epic showdown. This year’s tournament was nothing less than legendary.

The showdown began with the parade of champions. Two-time defending Magnet Toss World Federation Champion, Jim “Bald Eagle” Epps, brought in the Peele Bell Founder’s Cup Trophy to much fanfare. The official risk management briefing and subsequent drug testing was performed flawlessly by Dave “Ring Your” Bell, MTWF Elder Statesman. Finally, the rules were read (and disputed by Gary Autry), and the competitors hit the field for the day’s competition.

The tournament began with 24 fearless teams, but only one was destined for greatness. In the featured first round match up, Team OAC (Brad Davis and Dan Corey) sent Team Top Brass (Tim Joyce and Tracy Howe) packing with ease. Team OAC was poised for a huge win until they were pummeled by offensive powerhouse Aqua All-Stars (Mark Toburen and Chad Onken). The Aqua All-Stars gave a good showing in the middle rounds, but couldn’t clinch a championship birth.

The exciting early rounds quickly yielded to the championship match-up between the D-Town Players (Bryan Huffman and Chris Hughes), the DC Connection (Nick Errato, and John Collins), and the Hillsborough Hurlers (Beth Porter and Renee Holley). The final round format was set up so that the first team to win two games would be crowned the overall champion, and take home the Peele Bell Founder’s Cup Trophy. The D-Town players clearly had the advantage with two-time MTWF Champion, Bryan “The Buff” Huffman on board. However, Beth Porter destroyed the competition with two perfect tosses. Porter, a four-year starter, uses a special technique called the underhand hurl, which served the team well in a stunning 2-0-0 victory over the D-Town Players and DC Connection. This is the first MTWF Championship for the Hillsborough Hurlers. Porter was quoted as saying, “It was a hard fought victory… I had to bring my A-game!”

This year’s tournament was definitely one for the record books. Despite the epic battles, and the change in format, the name of the game was friendship and camaraderie. All competitors left the MTWF Stadium with a smile on their faces and memories to last a lifetime.
